The Ikea Hemnes is not as plain as some of the other Ikea furniture, but that just means it starts off with a good design base.

This stunning sunflower-fronted Hemnes from Retro Planet is a really uplifting hack.

The decal is specially made to fit an Ikea Hemnes dresser and there are several other designs to choose from.

It just adds a little ray of sunshine to a plain old piece of furniture. They have painted it khaki to fit in with the surroundings and added some brass knobs for a bit more style.

The velvet covers and cushions, as well as the bolster cushions, really set off the look perfectly!

step 3- prime

And now, Apply Primer:

• • Apply a thin coat of primer to all surfaces.

    You simply trim using a sharp blade and a straight edge as a guide. Plus it has some dings.

    And both sides of the nightstand have a small hole in it where the screw from the drawer was put in too far. Then I painted all the Rub ‘n Buff the same color as the rest of the nightstand.

    I think the bobbin trim is very cute and adds some dimension.

    Once sanded, be sure to wipe off all of the sanding dust with a clean cloth.

    It is also a good idea to wipe the panels down with rubbing alcohol to make sure they are clean before painting. I did 4 light coats.

  step 5- finishing touches

  Finally, let’s do some finishing touches

  • Add gold to the trim
    • To make the trim stand out and give the nightstand a more expensive feel, I’m adding on a layer of Rub ‘n Buff.
  • Top Coat:
    • Spray on and rub in the wax spray with the applicator pad.

      But we are rebels and didn’t listen! I find the dimensions of this night stand to be a little off- the drawer area feels a little small compared to the overall height of the piece. To combat this, start by adding trim below the drawer section.

      • Measure the length of each section where you’ll apply the trim.
      • Choose and Cut the Trim:
        • I’m using this Decorative Wood Trim that’ll give the nightstand a fancier, upscale look. 
        • Use a miter saw or miter box to cut the trim pieces to the correct length.

          Keep in mind that this stuff STINKS.

          This is a huge difference from the bold color we went with for the dresser in her nursery!

          NOTE: If you don’t want to repaint the entire dresser, you can take a drawer with you to the paint shop to have them color-match the IKEA color, so you only need to paint the panels.

          You can apply the paint with either a small foam roller, paintbrush, or paint sprayer.

          I’m letting mine dry 2 hours.

      • Finish Work :
        • Apply a thin bead of caulk around where the trim was adhered.
        • Smooth out the caulk line with a wet finger.
        • Fill in any holes. This is a huge upgrade and feels very expensive.
